More about Enzyme supplements
What are enzymes and how do they work?
Enzymes; essential proteins for digestion and metabolism
Enzymes play a crucial role in our body. They are responsible for breaking down carbohydrates, fats and proteins, so that we can absorb the nutrients we need and function well. Carbohydrates are converted into energy-rich glucose, proteins are broken down into amino acids and fats are converted into fatty acids and glycerol. DigeStim offers a vegetarian and vegan enzyme complex that helps with digestion.
Scientific studies have identified more than 5,000 different enzymes in our body. These enzymes are divided into two main categories: digestive enzymes and metabolic enzymes. Digestive enzymes are involved in the breakdown of food in our gastrointestinal tract, while metabolic enzymes are active in our cells, organs and blood.
Enzymes are biologically active and contain energy that is needed to support life. An important aspect is that the energy used for digestion in the gastrointestinal tract may come at the expense of the energy available for metabolism in our cells, organs and blood. If metabolism is slow, the breakdown and conversion of food into energy also slows down, resulting in a vicious circle of reduced energy production.
How are enzymes produced?
Our digestive glands, including the salivary glands, gastric glands, pancreas and intestinal glands, are responsible for the production of enzymes. Each enzyme has its own specific role in breaking down nutrients into the building blocks our body needs, provided that the conditions (temperature and pH) are optimal.
