Frequently asked questions

What does psyllium fibre do for my bowel movements?
Psyllium fibre absorbs fluid and swells in the gastrointestinal tract. It supports regular bowel movements, helps to soften the stools and is good for a normal bowel function.* *Health claims pending European authorisation.
Why is there an asterisk?
For plant ingredients (botanicals) such as psyllium, the EU has not yet completed its assessment of health claims. These claims are ‘on hold’ and may be used in the Netherlands under conditions, provided it is stated that they are pending European authorisation. That is what the asterisk means.
How many capsules do I take?
3 capsules 1 to 2 times a day, before your meal, with a large glass of water. Drink a second glass straight afterwards. Or as advised by your doctor or practitioner.
Why so much water?
Psyllium fibre absorbs fluid. So always take the capsules with a large glass of water, drink another glass straight afterwards and drink enough for the rest of the day. Do not take just before going to bed, and not in case of swallowing problems or a narrowing of the oesophagus or bowel.
Capsules or powder?
Capsules are handy on the go and for anyone who would rather not stir: no powder, no taste. Three capsules provide 1.5 g of psyllium fibre.
Is it vegan and gluten-free?
Yes. The capsule shell is made of pullulan, a plant-based material derived from tapioca starch. Gluten-free and free from milk, soy and maize.
Can I take it together with medicines?
Do not take the capsules at the same time as medicines and consult your doctor or pharmacist if in doubt. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult them first as well.
How do I store them?
Cool and dry, closed and not in the fridge. Keep out of reach of young children.

Origin

From the seed
of Plantago.

Psyllium is the seed of Plantago — a relative of the plantain that grows along our roadsides.

It grows in dry, warm regions; India is the largest growing area worldwide.

After the harvest the thin husk is separated from the seed: that husk is the fibre.

We add nothing — only a vegan capsule around it.

All about psyllium fibre

What psyllium is, what it does for your bowel movements, where it comes from and how to use the capsules.

What is psyllium fibre?

Psyllium fibre consists of soluble plant fibres from the seed of Plantago psyllium, a plant from the plantain family. Around every seed sits a thin husk; that husk consists largely of fibre. Vitarium Select Psyllium Fibre contains 500 mg psyllium fibre per capsule — 1.5 g per 3 capsules — and otherwise only a vegan pullulan capsule shell. No fillers, no additives.

Psyllium fibre and your bowel movements

Psyllium fibre absorbs a lot of fluid — up to many times its own weight — and swells in the gastrointestinal tract. It supports regular bowel movements and helps to soften the stools. Psyllium fibre is good for a normal bowel function, contributes to normal digestion and is good for digestion.* *Health claims for psyllium are pending European authorisation: the European Commission has not yet completed its assessment of claims for plant ingredients. In the Netherlands these ‘on hold’ claims may be used under conditions, with this statement.

Psyllium, psyllium husk or flea seed?

Three names for the same thing. Psyllium is the plant and the seed, psyllium husk is the seed husk that holds the fibre, and vlozaad is the Dutch name — after the small, shiny seeds that look like fleas. The label of these capsules says Psyllium Husk; the ingredients list says psyllium fibre (Plantago psyllium, seed).

Fibre in your daily diet

The Dutch dietary guidelines advise adults to get around 30 to 40 g of fibre a day, from a varied diet with vegetables, fruit, wholegrain products, pulses and nuts. Psyllium fibre is high in fibre: three capsules provide 1.5 g of psyllium fibre. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

How to use the capsules

Take 3 capsules 1 to 2 times a day, before your meal, with a large glass of water, and drink a second glass straight afterwards. Psyllium fibre absorbs fluid; so drink enough throughout the day. Do not take just before going to bed and not in case of swallowing problems or a narrowing of the oesophagus or bowel. Do not take the capsules at the same time as medicines and, if you use medication or are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor or practitioner first. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Capsules or powder?

Psyllium comes as a powder and as a capsule. Powder is stirred into water or yoghurt; capsules are swallowed with water. Capsules are handy on the go, dose precisely (500 mg each) and have no taste at all. For these capsules Vitarium deliberately chose purity: only psyllium, no fillers.

Vegan and gluten-free

The capsule shell is made of pullulan, a plant-based material from cassava — suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The capsules are gluten-free and free from milk, soy, maize and animal ingredients. Store them cool and dry, closed, not in the fridge and out of reach of young children.

Vitarium Select
